Visiting Sussex in October
Many people choose to take a break in October, either because it’s time to recharge batteries after the school summer holidays or to avoid them altogether. We’re lucky in Sussex to have so many expanses of open area, such as Ashdown Forest, Chailey Common, the South Downs National Park and, of course, some breathtaking coastal walks. These areas of “outstanding natural beauty” are ideal for long autumn walks and to observe the local fauna and wildlife.
Here at Woodside Cottages we’ve recently bid farewell to several families of Swallows that have been nesting and raising their young in our outbuildings. We will miss watching them circling the farmhouse at speed as they feed on the wing, but it does mean we can safely use the garage without the cars being splat upon! Flying higher over the farm, we can hear the distinctive mewing call of buzzards as these beautiful birds of prey circle over the fields looking for prey on the ground. And then, as darkness falls the night air is interrupted by the sound of owls making their presence known. If you’re up early enough they can be spotted perched on a fence post as night turns as day.
Another reason to visit Sussex during October is the Autumn Show and Game Fair at the South of England Showground, Ardingly, taking place over the weekend of 1 and 2 October. Not as large as the annual South of England Show (8-10 June 2017), the Autumn Show is a chance to learn more about the countryside, come face to face with birds of prey and other wildlife, have a go at country pursuits, watch displays and chat to stallholders. Great for families as children as under 16 go free!
For those energetic souls seeking a more challenging day out, the Beachy Head marathon takes place on Saturday 29 October. This 26.2 mile run covers true ups and downs of terrain while passing through picturesque villages and offering breathtaking views as the runners pass through the South Downs National Park and climb to the top of Beachy Head. Supporters get a scenic view of the runners from the Seven Sisters Country Park. What are you waiting for?
